(INSERT GFX 1) The survey took one hundred college students—And then used an open ended survey to determine such things as stress levels, ways they co-op with stress, symptoms they feel from it and how it effects their schoolwork. (INSERT GFX 2) According to the study 85% of students feel stressed out on a daily basis. Grade concerns, unclear assignments and lack of working time were some the reasons for this feeling.

NANCY ANSWER 2: For a lot of them its just getting organized, its setting priorities, you know people will say well my school comes first but I work 20 hours a week or I’m watching movies every night or I’m spending all my time with my boyfriend or that sort of thing so really just getting organized helps. There’s tutoring (INSERT BROLL)through the career center, there’s counseling we can help people with study skills the advisement center is helpful, the library helps people with research there’s all sorts of resources here it (EXIT BROLL) just amazes me how many students don’t take advantage of them until its too late.

V/O: Mark Tujimoto is another student who graduated without letting stress take over his life. (SOUND UP)
MARK ANSWER: Uh, I’d say the best techniques you could use to alleviate things is obviously, uh, managing your time. If you can manage your time properly it makes things a lot easier. Communication is huge, if you can get people in your class that are working together, um, it makes it a lot easier; because you can always bounce back onto each other. And it’s nice to know that everyone’s stressed out, it’s not just you.

Stand up wrap up: Although this may seem like a worn out subject it is important to shed light on this issue. Stress can eventually lead to depression and anxiousness and that certainly won’t help students that are trying there hardest to become post-secondary graduates. So do your best out there, hit the books and try to keep your stress in check. Reporting for FYI, I’m Lara Yousef.

(Graeme fiddling with his iPhone, Krista nudges him to pay attention)

Krista: Graeme, what is it that’s got you so distracted?

Graeme: Oh sorry Krista, just getting the latest updates on my iPhone, I’m just one of those people who likes to know what’s happening RIGHT NOW.

Krista: Well Graeme apparently you’re not the only one. There’s a technological phenomenon surfacing that is putting society in control of “what happens next”, and here’s Phil Gervais to tell us what we need to know about “Nowism”:

OPENING - Sound-up: MUSIC - “In the Future” – Bushwalla, volume swell on lyrics “the power of now!” Following this will be a loop of the chorus and instrumental portion of the song, or a similar GarageBand loop.
Cover viz:

V/O: Meet Cece Crawford. A self-proclaimed technology junkie.

CLIP 02:12:36:06 – 02:12:42:15 Cece Crawford
“I’m looking for any updates on my other websites.”

V/O: Cece is one of many young people caught up in “nowism”. A term originally coined by Trendwatching.com, Nowism is defined as society lusting after instant gratification, wanting everything from bank account updates, to the latest dirt on their latest celebrities now now now.
Cece working on her computer (02:04:53:19 – 02:05:05:21)

CLIP 02:01:50:09 – 02:02:05:23 Cece Crawford
Cece - “I guess that’s how most of us have been built from day one. We’ve had TV we’ve had radio, so a lot of us kinda built on our social network and we want everything to be about “me.” It’s kind of the “I” century.”

V/O: The social networks that we build today with nowism are mostly online, using tools like Facebook, and drastically decreasing or face-to-face communication.
Shot panning from Cece’s face to computer monitor, displaying Facebook (02:12:47:23 – 02:12:56:03)

CLIP - 02:02:21:04 – 02:02:31:15 Cece Crawford
“Yeah it’s kind of a sad realization but I mean if that’s what people have time for I guess it’s better than nothing right?”
Buttjoin clips with Phil’s reaction shot (02:03:48:18 – 02:03:50:28) or wide shot of interview with reaction (02:04:35:011 – 02:04:39:16)
CLIP – 02:01:02:16 – 02:01:11:16 Cece Crawford
“I think technology is moving pretty fast and if you don’t go along with technology you’ll be left in the dust and then you won’t even know what’s happening today. And it’s good for keeping up with the news as well.”

V/O: Although there are positive aspects technological advances brings forth such as face to face communication through Skype and the sharing of notes for school and work, not everyone agrees that all this new technology is keeping us aware. In fact, blogger Nova Spivack, who wrote an article on “nowism” argues that it’s doing just the opposite. Ironically enough, we spoke to Nova using the digital teleconferencing software Skype.
Shot panning the learning commons, various students on their computer (01:14:37:10 – 01:14:46:01) and cut to over the shoulder shot of Phil at laptop interviewing Nova (02:13:45:11 – 02:13:48:20)

CLIP – 03:09:08:20 – 03:09:18:21 Nova Spivack
“When you’re looking at your blackberry or e-mail or twitter, you’re not looking at anything else. So from that perspective, there’s a lot happening, but its very, very narrow.”
Buttjoin clups with Phil reacting to Nova on laptop (02:14:23:25 – 02:14:27:08)
CLIP – 03:11:17:09 – 03:11:37:18 Nova Spivack
“..and when you have everything instantly available, you have instant gratification, you never have to eave your house, there’s a danger that that we become very narrow and never look at things that don’t match our views or interests so we’re not exposed to things that we might not agree with or might not know about.”

V/O: And along with buying into this technology, there comes the even bigger danger of developing a reliance on it. And that is a very real fear for journalism professor Nathan Mallet, who uses constantly changing technology to teach his students.
Various b-roll viz
Students on laptops (01:19:20:28 – 01:19:24:13)
iPod dock (01:19:47:04 – 01:19:49:14)
Student texting (01:20:02:00 – 01:20:05:03)
Cut to Nathan as his name is mentioned in the V/O (01:12:54:02) and then begin interview ⇒

CLIP - 01:12:57:03 – 01:13:34:20 Nathan Mallet
“I mean imagine if our server crashed in this room, you know? What would we do? We’d be dead in the water. What if one of our printers stopped functioning? You know it’s not just me either, imagine if the Internet stopped functioning or a big part of it crashed. Financial industries would stop functioning; we’d have major catastrophes. There’s so much invested in this technology, just the internet as an infrastructure, so much is going on, so much of our live have taken to the internet that if something affected it then it would be dangerous to the entire society at large.”

V/O: Even with these threats in place, the younger generation of people like Cece Crawford, who are most affected by the nowism trends are continuing with caution to rely on technology and not worry about a total system crash.
Long panning shot of learning commons, various students on computers, in study rooms, using printers (01:18:25:22 – 01:18:41:01)

CLIP – 02:02:54:07 – 02:03:03:23 Cece Crawford
“There’s just so much technology out there, someone will just find something new and I don’t think it would be that big of a deal. That’s why I like technology it gives you a lot of variety, it’s not just one thing.”
Buttjoin clips with a reaction shot from Phil (02:03:51:09 – 02:03:53:25)
CLIP – 02:00:35:19 – 02:00:40:28 Cece Crawford
“I think it’s healthy, I mean it keeps me happy, just make sure you get your work done.”

V/O: “But despite the positive aspects that technological advancements and instant gratification deliver, youth culture cannot ignore the negative aspects either. Instead a balance must be struck between the trills of instant gratification, and life away from the computer screen. By using this logic, perhaps youth will once again take a break, and take things one day at a time.”

(00:36 – 01:13) ZOYA STANDUP – “This is Caesar, he’s a five year old miniature pinscher. He tends to be a little bit aggressive with big dogs. He can be really hyperactive and sometimes hard to control. He’s really lovable though so I forgive him. We’re going to see a pet psychic today and she’s hopefully going to tell us some of the things Caesar’s thinking and maybe…( Zoya laughs). (03:30 – 03:57) ZOYA BRIDGE – This is Caesar getting to know a big dog, and this has never really happened, He has one bigger dog friend, but it took them a while to get to know each other—and in this case this big dog is really calm, “Miles” and Caesar seems to have picked up on what the right thing to do is, and how to be, how to behave properly.

(03:57 – 04:25) SHEILA CLIP - I want to add that anybody can do this, I believe that we come into this world with the ability just all at different levels mine just happened to be at a higher level and it because very naturally and I do teach this and I’ve taught thousands of people all over the world to be able to do this, it’s kind of my mandate, I’d like to be able to get anybody in the world to be able to do this because I think it would enrich the lives of animals and people as well, we’d have a better understanding and a better respect for this as well.
(TAPE 7) B-ROLL – Camera on Sheila staring at Caesar, pan to Caesar staring back at Sheila then pan back to Sheila staring at Caesar. (44:25)
